643. Kathañca bhikkhu mettāsahagatena cetasā ekaṃ disaṃ pharitvā viharati? Seyyathāpi nāma ekaṃ puggalaṃ piyaṃ manāpaṃ disvā mettāyeyya, evameva sabbe satte mettāya pharati.

Tattha katamā mettā? Yā sattesu metti mettāyanā mettāyitattaṃ mettācetovimutti – ayaṃ vuccati ‘‘mettā’’.

Tattha katamaṃ cittaṃ? Yaṃ cittaṃ mano mānasaṃ hadayaṃ paṇḍaraṃ mano manāyatanaṃ manindriyaṃ viññāṇaṃ viññāṇakkhandho tajjāmanoviññāṇadhātu – idaṃ vuccati ‘‘cittaṃ’’. Idaṃ cittaṃ imāya mettāya sahagataṃ hoti sahajātaṃ saṃsaṭṭhaṃ sampayuttaṃ. Tena vuccati ‘‘mettāsahagatena cetasā’’ti.

四无量 - 此中，比丘以慈俱之心遍满一方而住，如是第二方，如是第三方，如是第四方。如是上下、四维、一切处、一切自体，以广大、无量、无怨、无害之慈俱心遍满一切世界而住。以悲俱之心遍满一方而住，如是第二方，如是第三方，如是第四方。如是上下、四维、一切处、一切自体，以广大、无量、无怨、无害之悲俱心遍满一切世界而住。以喜俱之心遍满一方而住，如是第二方，如是第三方，如是第四方。如是上下、四维、一切处、一切自体，以广大、无量、无怨、无害之喜俱心遍满一切世界而住。以舍俱之心遍满一方而住，如是第二方，如是第三方，如是第四方。如是上下、四维、一切处、一切自体，以广大、无量、无怨、无害之舍俱心遍满一切世界而住。
慈
比丘如何以慈俱之心遍满一方而住？譬如见到一个可爱、可意的人而生起慈心，如是对一切众生以慈心遍满。
此中，何谓慈？对众生的友爱、友爱性、友爱状态、慈心解脱 - 此称为"慈"。
此中，何谓心？心、意、意识、心脏、净白、意处、意根、识、识蕴、相应意识界 - 此称为"心"。此心与此慈相应、俱生、和合、相应。因此称为"慈俱之心"。
"一方"即东方或西方或北方或南方或上方或下方或四维或中间。
"遍满"即遍满、胜解。
"住"即行、转、护、持、活、行、住。因此称为"住"。
"如是第二"即如第一方，如是第二方，如是第三方，如是第四方，如是上方，如是下方，如是四维，如是中间。

此中，何谓慈？此处，比丘在修习色界禅那时，非善非不善非业异熟的唯作，为现法乐住，寻伺寂静...乃至...第二禅...乃至...第三禅...乃至...初禅...乃至...第二禅...乃至...第三禅...乃至...具足第四禅而住，与慈俱，在那时，对众生的友爱、友爱性、友爱状态、慈心解脱 - 此称为"慈"。其余诸法与慈相应。

701. 或善，或无记。三无量与乐受相应，舍与不苦不乐受相应。或异熟，或异熟法法，或非异熟非异熟法法。或有取有依，或无取有依。非染污而可染。三无量或有寻有伺，或无寻唯伺，或无寻无伺；舍无寻无伺。三无量或与喜俱，或与乐俱，非与舍俱，或不可说与喜俱；舍与舍俱。非见非修所断。非见非修所断因。或趣积集，或非趣积集非趣消减，非有学非无学，广大，不可说为小所缘，不可说为大所缘，不可说为无量所缘。中，不定，不可说为道所缘，不可说为道因，不可说为道增上。或已生，或未生，或当生。或过去，或未来，或现在。不可说为过去所缘，不可说为未来所缘，不可说为现在所缘。或内，或外，或内外，外所缘，无见无对。

702. 慈是因，三无量非因，有因，与因相应。慈是因亦有因；三无量不可说是因亦有因，有因而非因。慈是因亦与因相应；三无量不可说是因亦与因相应，与因相应而非因。三无量非因有因；慈不可说非因有因，亦不可说非因无因。
有缘，有为，无见，无对，非色，世间，可为某些所知，不可为某些所知，非漏，有漏，与漏不相应，不可说是漏亦有漏，有漏而非漏，不可说是漏亦与漏相应，亦不可说与漏相应而非漏。与漏不相应有漏。
非结...乃至...非缚...乃至...非暴流...乃至...非轭...乃至...非盖...乃至...非取...乃至...有所缘，非心，心所，与心相应，与心相杂，从心等起，与心俱生，随心转，与心相杂等起，与心相杂等起俱生，与心相杂等起随转，外，非所取，或有取，或无取。
非取...乃至...非烦恼...乃至...非见所断，非修所断，非见所断因，非修所断因。三无量或有寻，或无寻；舍无寻。三无量或有伺，或无伺；舍无伺。三无量或有喜，或无喜；舍无喜。三无量或与喜俱，或不与喜俱；舍不与喜俱。三无量与乐俱，舍不与乐俱。舍与舍俱，三无量不与舍俱，非欲界，色界，非无色界，系属，非出离，不定，有上，无诤。
